How to prepare for your Summer Road Trip

Arrange a Routine Vehicle Check Before your Trip

The last thing you want is to pack up the car and the kids, hit the road and everything come to a screeching halt due to a vehicle malfunction. The Service Centre at your local Dealership should check your brakes, windshield, battery, oil, tyres and fluid levels, inspect for any leaks and examine the hoses. This check-up will ensure the safety of your vehicle, improve fuel efficiency and avoid you being stranded in the middle of nowhere. You can also enjoy the car trip with an added peace of mind knowing your vehicle is in proper driving condition.

Update your Playlist

We all know the one thing that keeps us going on a long haul trip is our beloved playlist. Download those podcasts and audio books, sort out your Spotify and arrange those playlists. New music and consuming content that interests you will energize and excite you for the long drive ahead. We recommend adding some golden oldie and throwback songs to pump up the jam.

Pack your car methodically

Packing your car with purpose and method will help everyone in the long run. It will help your remember where everything is so if you need to grab something quickly you can. A few days before you leave, take time to make a list of everything you will need on your road trip. From snacks to entertainment options to blankets, make sure you have your bases covered when packing for your trip.

If you have more than one driver, consider bringing a pillow and blanket so others can sleep and trade off driving responsibilities. Making sure all your snacks and entertainment options are within each reach of your seat is crucial because it will eliminate frequent stopping to grab an item from the back.

Consult your owner’s manual to find your vehicle’s load capacity. Exceeding that load capacity will drastically reduce your vehicle’s petrol or diesel mileage and could also be a safety hazard, so try to pack light where possible. Additionally, placing items on top of the vehicle is fine, just be aware that it can reduce your mileage substantially, depending on the item, so only place the heaviest items on the roof if necessary.

Be prepared for the unexpected

You can do all you can pre trip to ensure that your journey is safe and smooth sailing, but sometimes unfortunate things can happen. The best thing you can do is make your own road trip emergency kit, which should include plenty of water, a torch, blankets, snacks, first aid kit, jumper leads, some basic tools and a fire extinguisher. We recommend you are covered by a Roadside Service Membership beforehand as well, if your vehicle is new you should be covered by your manufacturer for at least 3 years. It’s also smart to carry both cash and at least one credit card in case you have an emergency situation. As the saying goes, it’s better to be over-prepared than under-prepared.

Plan your meals and stock up on snacks

By being prepared with meals you can save money and time. If you decide to pack your lunch and snacks this means you can stop anywhere for a quick bite to eat and then carry on instead of waiting till you see the next Maccas or Pie Shop. Plenty of snacks is also important especially if you are travelling with the kids. Crackers, chips, nuts and granola bars all keep well in the car and are perfect road trip snacks.

Not only will a road trip provide loads of laughter and memorable moments, it might be the most cost-effective way to travel. When planning for any holiday, especially a road trip, preparation is the key to success. By following these tips, you can get a jump-start on your ultimate road trip. We wish you a safe journey and happy holidays. For more information visit the John Patrick Prestige Cars Showroom.
